I guess this channel fits for this… I’m writing a little blog series, one post every day, where I talk myself through writing a little hobby programming project. Today it’s about updating dependencies and trying to grok what the Spring dependency management plugin does for me. There’s lot of maybes and uncertainties in there, I bet people in this community could have some good comments!

It does nothing for you. It is just a relict from times where Gradle did not have built-in BOM support. You shouldn't use it, but the built-in support using

platform(...)

. Even its maintainer says that.

It’s really just that they haven’t had capacity to update documentation, Spring Initializr and such, then?

Probably. I was under the impression that the plugin does a few other things too and it would be helpful if you rely on those things and do not only want the versions, when I learned from linked thread what the maintainer said.
